The Britpop musical movement was a product of the Indie scene of the early 1990s and was heavely influenced by British guitar music of the 1960s and 1970s. In the wake of the popularity of American grunge music, many UK bands positioned themselves as opposing musical forces, referencing British guitar music of the past and writing about uniquely British (mainly working class) topics and attitudes. Britpop groups brought British alternative rock to the attention of mainstream audiences with considerble chart succsess.
